Freediving can take you almost anywhere there’s water – from tropical reefs and deepwater drop-offs to freshwater lakes and cenotes.

What makes a great freediving destination depends on what you’re looking for. Some locations offer easy shore access and calm conditions that are ideal for beginners, while others are known for deep water, thriving freediving communities, extraordinary visibility, or encounters with marine life that are difficult to experience anywhere else in the world.

Because freediving allows you to move quietly through the underwater world without tanks, regulators, or streams of bubbles, it can create a particularly immersive way to explore these environments. But no two destinations offer the same experience.

1. Dive into a freediving hub: Panglao, Bohol, Philippines

Panglao is one of the Philippines’ best-known freediving destinations, combining easy access to deep water, warm tropical conditions, and a thriving freediving community. The island is home to several schools and training centers, including a number of Molchanovs freediving instructors and Instructor Trainers, making it a great place to take your first freediving course, develop new skills, or train for greater depths. Freedive SuperHOME is also one of the first Molchanovs Gear Testing Centers, where divers can try selected Molchanovs equipment before committing to their own setup.

Beyond the training line, Panglao also offers plenty of opportunities for fun diving and is the jumping-off point for nearby Balicasag Island, known for large schools of jackfish, sea turtles, and occasional sightings of whale sharks and manta rays 

2. Experience unmatched biodiversity: Raja Ampat, Indonesia

Looking for megafauna, macro life, colorful coral reefs, and an abundance of different dive sites? Raja Ampat in West Papua is known for its pristine visibility, calm, warm waters, and extraordinary marine biodiversity.

Think healthy soft and hard corals, mangroves, fish, tiny critters, and large marine animals almost everywhere you look. From world-famous dive sites to shallow coral reefs, freediving in Raja Ampat invites days of exploration.

3. See an otherworldly environment: Yucatán Peninsula, Mexico

Mexico’s cenotes offer an incredible alternative to ocean diving. These natural limestone sinkholes throughout the Yucatán Peninsula offer tranquil conditions and crystal-clear freshwater, with visibility that can exceed 100 meters.

While divers may encounter freshwater fish species and turtles, the real draw of the cenotes is their dramatic beams of light and otherworldly cave environments. Deeper down in some cenotes, more experienced divers can encounter a halocline — a striking visual phenomenon created where freshwater meets saltwater — or layers of hydrogen sulfide that can resemble an underwater cloud.

4. Encounter a freediving mecca: Dahab, Egypt

For freediving in the Middle East, Dahab is difficult to beat. Known as a freediving training and competition hub, the town has a relaxed atmosphere and a thriving international freediving community.

Its combination of deep-water dive sites close to shore and generally calm conditions makes Dahab an excellent destination for learning and year-round training, attracting everyone from beginners to elite athletes.

5. The aquarium of the world: Baja California Sur, Mexico

The Sea of Cortez’s outstanding biodiversity makes Baja California Sur one of the world’s best diving locations. La Paz is famous for encounters with sea lions, while Cabo Pulmo offers opportunities to see bull sharks and large schools of jacks.

At different times of the year, visitors may also encounter gray whales, humpback whales, sperm whales, and blue whales, along with orcas, whale sharks, large fevers of mobula rays, sailfish, and marlin. Diving is possible year-round, although water temperatures can be cooler and visibility varies by season and location.

6. Discover volcanic depths: Soufrière Bay, Dominica

Known as the Caribbean’s “Nature Island,” Dominica offers exceptional conditions both for depth training and underwater exploration. Soufrière Bay sits within an ancient volcanic crater, where deep water can be reached close to shore and calm, warm conditions make the area suitable for everyone from beginners to competitive freedivers. 

Beyond the training line, the surrounding Soufrière-Scott’s Head Marine Reserve offers dramatic volcanic walls, colorful reefs, and abundant marine life, giving freedivers plenty to explore between sessions.

7. Dive into an icon: The Great Blue Hole, Belize

The Great Blue Hole is one of the world’s most recognizable dive sites, a vast circular marine sinkhole surrounded by the turquoise waters of Lighthouse Reef. Its sheer scale, deep blue water, dramatic underwater formations, and encounters with reef sharks make it a true bucket-list destination for experienced freedivers. 

The sinkhole reaches around 124 meters at its deepest point; however, its more famous stalactite formations begin at around 30-40 meters. It’s a striking destination that combines natural history, dramatic depth, and an underwater landscape unlike almost anywhere else.

8. Explore freshwater lakes: Switzerland

Switzerland might not be the first place that comes to mind when you think of freediving, but its more than 1,500 lakes have helped create an active freshwater freediving scene in the heart of Europe. From alpine lakes surrounded by mountains to easily accessible training spots near major cities, divers can explore a completely different underwater environment of submerged trees, rocky landscapes, reeds, and freshwater fish. 

Cooler temperatures and changing conditions offer a contrast to tropical diving, making Switzerland a surprising destination for anyone looking to experience freediving somewhere a little different.
