Howe Sound, West Vancouver, Canada, 8 October 2024 - The Oceanoid’s Howe Deep AIDA Freediving Depth Competition has successfully concluded for the seventh consecutive year.

The Competition

Elliot Beamer - British Columbia DNF Provincial Record - 48m (157ft)

Organizers rise to the challenge

Howe Sound experiences extreme tidal changes and currents, which presents a special challenge for competition organizers. Despite these obstacles, the goal of the Howe Deep Competition is to bring together a diverse group of divers and volunteers from across the region for a fun, safe, and challenging weekend of freediving. Prior to the competition, Oceanoid offers training for competitors and for the competition safety team.

Oceanoid promotes the development of the local diving community by offering free Competition Safety Diver certifications for volunteers, along with training community members on the logistics of organizing freediving competitions.

Despite facing numerous challenges - including securing the platform in extreme conditions, obtaining Canadian special event insurance, and covering costs for essential safety equipment and crew - Oceanoid prioritizes accessibility. They consistently operate these competitions at a financial loss, maintaining low entry fees to encourage broader participation in the sport.

The next competition will be a pool event scheduled for March 2025. For updates, please check Oceanoid’s website.
