When you hear the word freediving, what image comes to mind?
For many of us at Molchanovs International, we picture Alexey Molchanov, our co-founder, diving an incredible 131m (430ft) of depth wearing his signature gold-accented monofin. The monofin itself is a perfect representation of grace, speed, and depth as its shape is so similar to that of sea mammals, our very distant diving cousins. Molchanovs International is also well-known for the monofin, which was the first piece of freediving equipment created by Alexey and his mother, Natalia Molchanova, even before the Molchanovs International brand was created in 2010. Since the birth of the Molchanovs monofin, dozens of national and world records have been set with it.

Molchanovs is perhaps best well-known for our line of monofins, which have assisted a countless number of freediving athletes in setting many national and world records. Since monofins are the most powerful propulsive tool freedivers can use in competitions, an infinite number of hours are consistently being spent attempting to perfect this favorite piece of freediving equipment. This is why we would like to share with you the general history of monofins and our own personal journey with them.

Static, or a breath-hold at the surface of water that is absent of movement, is one of the easiest disciplines for freedivers to train. However, when we say “easy,” we don’t mean that it’s simple to reach long breath-holds - many freedivers find static (STA) especially challenging due to the mental aspects of facing contractions for a prolonged period of time. But STA is definitely the easiest discipline for a freediver to train simply because all you need is a pool and a certified freediving buddy - and if you don’t have those, you can simply train on dry land, or even from your bed!

Freedivers who are already familiar with Molchanovs Base Training know that it is a program individually crafted for different levels of freedivers that help them progress to better equalization, longer breath-holds and distances in the pool, and deeper depths. While taking a freediving course is the first step on your freediving journey, training between courses is where progress really happens - that is why Base Training was created.

Training your static breath-hold (STA) makes up only a small portion of your first freediving course. While some students do continue to train STA afterward since it is so easily accessible, others sometimes ignore it and see it as just a course requirement and nothing more. So why exactly would you want to keep training STA if you prefer dynamic or depth disciplines?
